Much in the same way emo fused itself to rap in the 2010s, Philadelphia-based duo Korine aims to bring the former genre’s distinct vocal style to traditional new wave sounds. Three albums deep into carving out this fairly unique niche, their fourth LP A Flame in the Dark is set to arrive at the end of the month via their longtime label home of Born Losers. Before then, we’re getting a third sample of the record with the newly unveiled single “Twist the Knife”—a bouncy take on darkwave that reaches ecstatic peaks through its lyrical epiphanies of letting it all burn.

“This song explores the freedom of giving up,” the duo of Morgy Ramone and Trey Frye share of “Twist the Knife.” “Letting go of all attachments and looking at the world for how it is. Embracing insignificance and personal truth like an impenetrable armor. The pain of life is of no consequence to someone who’s accepted their fate.”
