Horsepower is the new project of NYC-based songwriter and (mostly) reformed horsegirl Charlotte Weinman, and “Are You Blushing?” serves as the moniker’s first single. Translating a background in theater and a prior musical career indebted to aiding other songwriters into a personal statement of her own, the track sees Weinman channeling the elegant balladry of Mitski and a modern dream-pop sensibility into a song about the involuntary thoughts that tend to come with a prospective romance.
“This song is about having a crush that invades your brain space like contagion,” Weinman shares. “It’s a little scary because you're not in full control of your thoughts, and also because the brain is a powerful thing—you can use it to think a crush to death. It’s also about the way every crush is a mirror, and sometimes what’s addictive about being imaginative about a crush is really the reflection of ourselves the crush offers back—the visualization of our lives through the crush.”
