We got a proper introduction to Nashville trio Lockstep in 2023, when the band released their debut project appropriately titled Arrival. Landing somewhere between the post-Nothing grungegaze movement and the massive-canvas post-rock of the metal-centric UK label Church Road Records, the release’s six songs feel like they stretch considerably further than 27 minutes, each one dragging the listener deeper into layers of guitar feedback accompanied by Austin Rolison’s spectral vocals and doom-metal percussion.
While there’s no word on a follow-up to that release at this point, the band is sharing a new single today called “Drag Along” that serves to promote their upcoming string of dates in the Western US with Grivo that kicks off this Friday in Texas. The track is every bit as forceful as those heard on Arrival, if not more so—the familiar palette of doomy post-rock gives way to something truly apocalyptic as the track winds down, which evidently speaks to the barely audible lyrical direction of the song. “[‘Drag Along’] touches on the passage of life and the things left in its wake,” the trio shares.
