Ten years on and there haven’t been a whole lot of artists’ “most personal albums to date” that hold a candle to Sufjan StevensCarrie & Lowell. The release marked a sobering pivot back to his indie-folk origins after the highly experimental Age of Adz and a slew of electronic releases as Sisyphus he recorded with rapper Serengeti and fellow Oscar noms Son Lux, while the subject matter focused on Stevens’ complicated relationship with his mother.

A decade and countless ambient-pop meditation albums later and Stevens is returning to Carrie & Lowell with a new double-LP reissue featuring seven new tracks—five demos, including one for his Call Me By Your Name single “Mysteries of Love,” and two alternate versions, including one for “Wallowa Lake Monster” from 2017’s The Greatest Gift Mixtape—as well as a 40-page book made up of collages, sketches, family photos, and other landscape photography taken by Stevens leading up to the album’s original release.
