You may know Sean Nicholas Savage from his high-profile writing and session collaborations with Solage, Dreamville, or Mac DeMarco (not to mention indie peers, such as Kirin J Callinan and Drugdealer), though the Canadian songwriter has also been prolific in carving out his own musical lane over the past 15 years or so. Today he’s announcing his 15th solo record, The Knowing, which is set to arrive over the summer via his new label home of Born Losers Records. The record’s lead single features yet another compelling collaboration, with fellow hypnagogic pop experimentalist Marci duetting with him on “Your Drug.”
The track sees Savage leaning further into his bag of sophisti-pop influences, with the results sounding indistinguishable from the stable of early-’80s artists like The Blue Nile and Prefab Sprout. “I wrote this waiting around forever to catch a bus in East Hollywood,” Savage recalls. “Like a puzzle, or as if pulling a thread from one line to the next, the song wrote itself. I didn’t think I could ever really sing a song like that, though maybe someone else would record it someday, never knowing at the time, that someone would be me.”
The video for the track sees Savage and Marci trading verses and acting out the song’s lyrics in a dimly lit bar and in the streets of LA.
