It may get lost in the reverberated layers of warm, hypnagogic sound and pitched bubblegum-pop vocals, but the central message of Lionmilk’s new single “only one” is one of overcoming heartbreak. It’s a subtle optimism that’s long lined the LA-based songwriter’s work as he addresses tough subject matter—loss, pandemic-spawned isolation—with the latest single from his forthcoming debut for Stones Throw, WHEN THE FLOWERS BLOOM, considering both the pain and healing of moving on from romantic ruin.

“‘only one’ is for the lovers whose hearts have been broken,” he shares of the single, which was originally released as a loose track in 2022, and whose touched-up version playfully bounces through its two-and-a-half-minute runtime with bright keys and tight percussion. “It wasn’t meant to be, and the pain is real, but hey, a lesson learned, right? Love will be back, in due time.”

Matching the song’s playful lilt is a music video directed by Flatspot which sees Lionmilk (and his alter egos) in the studio and making the most of a day out in LA. Check it out below, and pre-order WHEN THE FLOWERS BLOOM ahead of its May 30 release.
