After releasing her debut EP Birthday Party in 2023, Brooklyn artist Vines has been mostly quiet outside of sharing a few slow and somewhat reverb-filled singles—not to mention slower and reverbier versions of those singles shortly thereafter. The project of composer/producer/multi-instrumentalist Cassie Wieland straddles the line between ambient and indie-pop heavily sedated with vocoder and other effects that serve as weighted blankets on these compositions, which feel a bit otherworldly as a result. Think Imogen Heap covering Grouper.

After releasing her most recent single in January, Vines returns today with the news that her debut album I’ll be here is scheduled to arrive on July 18, with another new track out now called “Evicted” marking the lead single. Opening like one of the hazy compositions previously lining her small discography, it slowly adds layers until slowcore percussion and what nearly passes as doom-metal guitar enter the picture. Meanwhile, Wieland’s stark lyrics contemplate the difference between birth and eviction. “‘Evicted’ is the first song with lyrics that I wrote for this record,” she explains. “It’s about going through a transitional period in your life and not knowing where it’s going. I’m reflecting on the insecurity and discomfort that can come with healing.”

Equally alluring is the song’s Evan Chapman–directed music video, which opens on an all-red frame before pulling back at the snail’s pace the song carries to reveal Wieland—first performing the song in earnest, then yeeting all her gear into the snowy foreground. Check it out below, and pre-order I’ll be here right here.
