Two years after releasing her last EP, Happiest Woman, Maria Crawford returned in March to unveil a double single under her Wilby project, her first new material since signing with Hit the North Records. And while “Pleaser” felt like a more polished version of Crawford’s bedroom-pop back catalogue, “Spin” had a bit of a twang to it that gets further explored on Wilby’s latest track, “Experiments.” The more explicitly country-indebted cut more prominently spotlights Crawford’s C&W-friends vocals as she recounts an experience of self-growth and the ways it may have affected her partner.
“When we debunk old patterns and start to rebuild with new ones, there is an uncomfortable period of trial and error,” she explains. “I was incredibly conscious that other people were going to be affected while I tried these new behaviors on. The song was written with my newfound bravery, acknowledging the utter vulnerability it takes to have someone see you through the healing journey.”
True to the song’s sound, the music video (co-directed by Crawford with Ryan Hartley) leans into the Americana aesthetic alluded to in the song’s alt-country sound. “I had fun leaning into a bit of a country moment,” she adds. “I wanted the video to feel intimate, raw, and honest—something that feels as personal as the song itself.”
