Three years after releasing his debut collection of songs Fruit From the Trees, Nashville-based Americana songwriter Jack Van Cleaf returned a month ago with his self-monogram-titled sophomore LP, JVC (well, unless it was named after his favorite Japanese electronics brand). His debut for Dualtone not only followed acclaim from country-rock icon Zach Bryan, but the record even features a guest spot from the songwriter on the single “Rattlesnake.”
The album’s release was immediately followed by a brief trek across the Midwest, and Van Cleaf will hit the road again in August to supplement those dates with a tour that mostly spans the West Coast. In the meantime, back home in Nashville he recorded a “Neighborhoods” performance of the album cut “Piñata” with a pair of backing guitarists/vocalists in a setting that’s long bred creativity. “We filmed this session on the back porch of my dad’s house, where I’ve written lots of songs,” he explains. “I wrote ‘Shouldn’t Have Gone to LA’ one afternoon sitting out there and have had so many other breakthroughs writing in that special place.”
