It’s been nearly 40 years since Pixies first unleashed their pioneering loud-quiet dynamics, directly impacting everyone from Nirvana to Radiohead in their wake. The band’s co-founder Kim Deal hasn’t performed with them since 2013, but they’ve toured steadily since then, and last year saw the release of their first new album with Band of Skulls bassist Emma Richardson, who replaced Paz Lenchantin in March 2024. As a testament to their enduring legacy, their 1988 track “Where Is My Mind” recently surpassed one billion streams on Spotify.
The band is currently in the midst of a North American tour hitting cities to play two nights of shows in each, performing their seminal early-’90s albums Bossanova and Trompe le Monde on the first night, with the second night focusing on other hits as well as songs from their latest album, The Night the Zombies Came. FLOOD photographer Skylar Watkins—who choose her photography handle “The Sad Punk” from the Trompe le Monde song—captured images from night one at the Hollywood Palladium this past weekend, where they were joined by openers Kurt Vile and the Violators.
Check out shots from the evening below, and revisit our recent interview with the Pixies’ Charles Thompson, Joey Santiago, and Emma Richardson here.
