After a brief era of dropping music under his own name, Trevor Powers returned to his Youth Lagoon moniker in 2023 ahead of the release of his fourth album under the band name with Heaven Is a Junkyard, which already saw the release of its follow-up back in February with Rarely Do I Dream. His bug-eyed psychedelic pop has evolved since his 2011 debut into something more narrative-driven and balladic, pairing his storytelling and distinctive vocals against increasingly experimental beds of sound.
FLOOD photographer Kimberley Ross caught up with Powers in the midst of Youth Lagoon’s recent UK tour to spend the day with the songwriter, both capturing his band’s powerful set at London’s Islington Assembly Hall with opener Clara Mann as well as snagging portraits with the artist—on the street, in the venue’s greenroom, and in a local tattoo shop, where Powers got some ink done by Vietti of Old Habits. Check out Ross’ photos as narrated by Powers below.
