As demonstrated in the band’s recent single “Cruel Power,” The Happy Fits are powering through heartbreak in a healthy way by transforming their raw emotions into infectious power-pop jams. While that track served as the introduction to their new record Lovesick, today we’re getting another taste of that upcoming release with a song called “Wild in Love” that captures the “unhinged” energy at the core of the LP, as frontman Calvin Langman aptly describes it. Over the song’s three minutes, though, the quartet maintains a perfect composure through giddy dance-punk rhythms and new wave choruses.
“I wanted this track to feel like sprinting through a red light,” Langman shares. “It’s the sound of falling for someone you know you shouldn’t, but loving the thrill of it anyway. The lyrics are breathless and frantic, like trying to outrun a consequence that’s definitely catching up. There’s fear, but there’s also this wild abandon that’s kind of intoxicating. It’s a little unhinged in the best way. I wasn’t trying to write a healthy love song; I was trying to write a true one.”
Shot by Jacqueline Justice with a DSLR camera, 16mm film, and a grainy handicam, the video naturally shows the band experiencing fits of happiness in various familiar locales across LA, posing with real-life couples and dancing with fans. “Jacq had the amazing idea of getting couples in the wild kissing to portray how love is everywhere if you look hard enough,” Langman adds. “After some really awesome public meet ups we did in Philly and New York in the spring, we knew we had to get one going in LA. The beach scene in the video was shot on Dockweiler Beach at the most perfect sunset, and we were luckily joined by around 30 awesome fans who joined from a secret text we sent out the day prior. The 16mm film shots really helped capture the nostalgia of the ’80s-inspired synth on this track.”
