LA’s Future Gods Records has been a staple of the underground for over a decade now, initially gaining attention via a slew of releases by Pittsburgh-based neo-psych/plunderphonics figure Wise Blood back in the mid 2010s. While they’ve maintained this experimental focus up to the present day, their latest project is a singles series titled Unearth which aims to specifically spotlight artists across the globe who are on the verge of breaking out.

That mission kicks off today with a single and video from Dublin-based songwriter Callum Wall, whose new track “Giving You Nothing” is a similar blend of hypnagogic pop and hip-hop that influenced some of Wise Blood’s most memorable tracks. Citing a range of influences that broadly includes Frou Frou and Turnstile, it’s an intriguing balance of hard, fairly ominous beats and vocal modification that feels rooted in the early-’10s indie pop scene, all packed together to create a composition largely steered by instinct. “I was struggling to put my emotions into words, so I let the song build itself—layer by layer, lyric by lyric—without overthinking it,” Wall shares. “‘Giving You Nothing’ is one of the first tracks I created purely by feel, and it ended up being the most honest reflection of where my head was at during that time.”

The track’s grayscale music video will be a part of a larger visual project planned for later this year. Check it out below.
