It’s only been eight months since Washington DC’s Flowers for the Dead released their second LP, Magnolia, yet the trio are already returning with a new EP titled First Place this Friday. After teasing the release at the tail end of June with the opening track “Tiny Beanie,” vocalist/guitarist Jessie Szegö, bassist Ella Buskirk, and drummer Ten Bears are returning today with one final pre-release taste of the four-song project with the closer, “Perfect View.”
The breezy indie-pop cut keeps things fairly straightforward as it pushes toward a final instrumental swell to close the EP out on, with Szegö noting that the track’s subject matter grew well beyond a similar sense of simplicity. “‘Perfect View’ started as a simple love song about finding your person, but then evolved into a song more about feeling isolated within your community and yearning for that love and acceptance.”
Naturally, the music video Szegö created for the track illustrates this struggle with a fairly unique meet-cute. “We dressed our friends up as mimes and had them act out a love story,” Szegö adds. “It was also my first time directing and editing a video of ours fully by myself, which was a blast and I hope to do more in the future!”
