Last month, Aïda Mekonnen Caby announced her debut album Mais Uma, a collection of songs resulting from the young songwriter processing the loneliness of relocating to a new city in a new part of the world where you barely even speak the language. The collection was brought to fruition with production assistance from Brooklyn duo TOLEDO, who add an extra layer of warmth to these intimate indie-pop recordings.
The second single to arrive from the batch is called “A Sign of Life,” and Caby explains that Dan Álvarez de Toledo and Jordan Dunn-Pilz are largely responsible for the tenderly sung tune’s full-band feel. “‘A Sign of Life’ was this minimalist demo I had that TOLEDO helped sort of bring to life with these beautiful synth layers,” she shares. “It was also fun putting some bass on this one, whereas I usually exclusively just track my vocals and guitar.”
That collective feel distracts from the personal subject matter of its lyrics, which Caby notes were inspired by a realization of certain habits. “The song itself was a meditation on recognizing patterns and repetition in one’s behaviors and decisions, and maybe deciding to finally do something different,” she explains.
