Over the past five years, KennyHoopla has been gathering steam with the help of collaborators ranging from punk and indie icons such as Travis Barker, Bloc Party, and Grouplove to younger voices within these circles such as nothing, nowhere, Day Wave, and grandson. Last week he announced a new EP titled conditions of an orphan// that sees him teaming up with Paramore drummer Zac Farro on the upbeat rhythms of the project’s lead single, “orphan//.” There’s a bit of Foals in the track’s dance-punk bounce, despite its heavy lyrics seeing the artist processing trauma.
The songwriter returns today with a music video for the track, which was directed by fashion photographer Jacob Cooper. The clip serves as more than just a fitting set of images for the single’s runway-worthy sounds—it depicts the multi-dimensional talent required to steer a project of KennyHoopla’s scope while maintaining a DIY ethos. “I wanted to portray my love of fashion, but at the same time capture what it feels like in this industry to have to wear all the hats and do most things yourself these days,” the artist shares. “Sometimes the coffee gets spilled when you have too many things to do at once, but you just gotta work through it.”
