Matt Bachmann has shared “Heavy Step,” a spectral waltz set to be featured on his new LP, Compost Karaoke. Featuring Derek Baron on drums, Jeff Tobias on alto saxophone and bass clarinet, Big Thief’s James Krivchenia on percussion, and Cory Bracken on vibraphone, the quick march evokes images of a technicolor funeral on a distant planet.

“‘Heavy Step’ is a regal dirge told in three parts,” Bachmann shares. “It opens with a fanfare of bombastic bass clarinets glissandoing up/down octaves and going through too many pedals to count. The center finds the listener in a moment of introspection, with one’s thoughts following the shining, Harold Budd–esque piano melody and one’s feet softly stomping to the enduring synth pad/lo-tom quartet-note pulse. Counter melodies played on synthetic French horns and strings rise and fall as the listener tramps forward, only to find themselves back where they started in pomp and glissandoing grandiosity.”
