Launched decades before Lollapalooza and Coachella took over the US festival landscape, Bumbershoot has been a mainstay every Labor Day weekend in Seattle since 1972 (aside from a three-year hiatus during the pandemic era). Held at the 74-acre Seattle Center, which was originally built for the 1962 World’s Fair, the music and arts festival returned for its 52nd edition this past weekend to offer another reminder why this event remains so unique. With the iconic Space Needle looming in the background, there’s much to explore beyond the great live acts, from wrestling and skateboarding to comedy and fashion shows—not to mention endless cuisine choices. This year’s schedule also saw the return of the Motley Zoo Cat Circus, with shelter cats and kittens showing off their cuteness (and, sometimes, death-defying acts) while encouraging rescue and rehabilitation of animals in need.
FLOOD photographer Eleanor Petry returned to her hometown to capture live shots throughout the weekend, with her personal highlights including “Car Seat Headrest’s anthemic set, Fat Dog’s energy, a bittersweet Tennis performance, Scowl’s intensity, back-to-back bangers from Weezer, and iconic sets from Janelle Monáe and Digable Planets. And Indigo De Souza, who brought everyone together.” She also wanted to give a special “shoutout Homer’s lamb pita!”
Take a look through her photos below.
