After a fairly prolific period of releasing music in the 2010s as a solo songwriter and frequent collaborator of Alex G, Foxes in Fiction, and other artists connected to the Orchid Tapes label, Emily Yacina released her first proper album Remember the Silver in 2019. While she hasn’t released much new material since then (her fanbase was sated with the odds-and-ends compilation All the Things in 2022 celebrating a decade of output) as she relocated from the East Coast to Long Beach, the recent reveal of an LP titled Veilfall signals that Yacina will be picking up where she left off six years ago with another collection of airy indie-pop compositions fueled by longing and self-revelation.

The latest cut to be shared from the album, “The Clearing,” is the exact type of doe-eyed poetry and lightly experimental songcraft Yacina has long excelled at, with a simple lyrical repetition and minimal bedroom-pop soundbed unexpectedly opening up to a funky, erratic guitar solo about a minute in, which almost feels like it’s giving voice to the excitement bubbling beneath the surface of Yacina’s calm voice. “It's an ode to the space that only intimacy with another person can take you,” the artist shares. “This song evolved a lot—I began writing it in 2022. The lyrics are minimal, and we wanted to honor that by exploring the different places the words can take you through sound and instrumentation.”
