The album title says it all—even though indie-pop experimentalist Will Paquin is reining in the erratic energy of his early singles to release his first-ever proper LP, he still has a sense of humor about it. Before Hahaha arrives this Friday, the songwriter is teasing another one of its tracks via a live performance in a backyard in his newly established hot-and-mosquito-y hometown of Nashville, Tennessee. The song in question? A ballad processing the utter disrespect shown to one of his prized divine beasts circa 2010.
“‘Slifer the Sky Dragon’ was written about this Yu-Gi-Oh! card I used to have as a kid,” he explains of the mid-album track, which he performs for “Neighborhoods” solo on acoustic guitar. “I found it all torn up by someone at school once and was all beat up about. I wrote the song 15 years later to make some sense of the childhood travesty.”
