Released last Friday, Minnesota-based songwriter Caroline Smith’s new album as Your Smith marks a triumphant return for the artist after a long absence. She has a good excuse, though—in the time since dropping 2019’s Wild Wild Woman EP, Smith settled down and started a family and even returned to school. “It wasn’t a very neat or fluid process, but it required me to think about how to fit music into my life in a way that’s entirely on my own terms,” she shared upon The Rub’s release last week.
Another facet of that life is the bar she owns with her husband in Stillwater, which felt like a natural spot for filming a “Neighborhoods” session. Joined by The Ruffin’ Trio, the quartet muster an interesting interpretation of the Rub cut “Mr. Revival” over which Smith’s voice soars. “I was so stoked when The Ruffin’ Trio said they’d back me up,” she shares. “Even more stoked when they made me an honorary member by lending me a cowboy shirt. These boys, this bar, this town, and this song have such a special place in my heart.”
