It’s been over a year since we’ve heard any new material from NYC’s SKORTS, the lightly gothic alt-rock quartet who first emerged in 2023 with their single “Cyclops Girlfriend.” The project’s sound was slowly refined over the course of five additional tracks, though next month will see them fully introduce themselves with their newly announced debut album and its titular artist statement: Incompletement. “To us, it means allowing oneself to live and create in an ever-changing state of impermanence,” the band shared, speaking to the subtly shifting set of influences on the tracks they’ve already released.

Along with the news comes the project’s first single, “Burden,” which spotlights the band’s ability to build tension as much as it does their cohesive post-punk sound—with a particular emphasis on vocal harmonies. “[It’s a] song from the very early days that fell out of our live rotation for a while and almost got completely swept under the rug, but our producer Teddy O’Mara wanted to bring it back,” explains lead guitarist Char Smith. “It was one of the two original demos we released to SoundCloud (‘Cyclops Girlfriend’ being the other). There’s a video of us playing it in its original form somewhere, but the groove and structure really got refined in the studio.”

Check out the Nick Charnas–directed, goop-filled video for the track below, and pre-order Incompletement here ahead of its Halloween release date.
