Formed nearly 20 years ago in Atlanta, The Coathangers are currently leaving the band on the backburner as their members explore other projects within and outside of music for the time being. Guitarist and co-vocalist Julia “Crook Kid” Kugel has remained quite prolific, though, with a series of solo and side-projects since the band’s last album The Devil You Know, released six years ago. She’s also responsible for dusting off a pair of Coathangers demos buried in the closet during the recording of the band’s previous album, 2016’s Nosebleed Weekend.
“Hurry” and “Drifter” will finally see the light of day on October 31, when Suicide Squeeze Records releases the dual single as a 7-inch. The former track is available to hear today, and its lo-fi recording quality and stripped-back simplicity surely sets the stage for its accompanying B-side. “The recordings are raw, but that’s kind of what I like about them,” Kugel shares. “They’re songs created within the tension of making an album—amidst actualization. There’s an excitement and energy that’s fresh and experimental in some ways.”
“Hurry” in particular served as an experiment for the band, as all three members swapped out instrumental duties on the recording. “I was very glad when Suicide Squeeze agreed to put them out on a 7-inch,” Kugel adds, “because it gives an insight into The Coathangers’ writing process. It feels like a bit of time travel.”
