Hailing from a historically fruitful New Jersey emo scene, New Brunswick’s Flycatcher is leaning further into the adjacent post-hardcore movement on their third and grungiest album to date, Wrench. Ahead of the project’s release on October 24 via Will Yip’s Memory Music, the band is sharing another single titled “Down,” which balances the relatively breezy hooks of their past material with the dense bed of sound familiar to just about any project Yip has been involved with as producer. Beyond that, the composition seamlessly incorporates slide guitar, which inspired the hint of twang heard across the new LP.

“‘Down’ is one of those songs that felt like it already existed before it came to us, so the challenge was making sure we didn’t over-write anything,” shares Flycatcher’s frontman Greg Pease, speaking to the song’s deceptive simplicity. “I think we’re all stoked on how it turned out—it’s definitely a favorite amongst the band. It’s not often that you get to write a song so simple and it comes together how it was originally written, more or less. ‘Down’ also really solidified the slide guitar for us on this record. Since it worked so well on here we knew we needed to incorporate it into some other songs.”
