Lovesick, the recently released fourth album from indie-pop outfit The Happy Fits, saw the quartet powering through heartbreak with infectious power-pop jams and just a bit of unhinged energy. While we had the honor of debuting the pre-album single “Wild in Love”—a blend of dance-punk rhythms and new-wave choruses—the project kicks off with “Do You See Me?,” an homage to both The Partridge Family and the jaunty contemporary indie-pop of bands like Vunderbar that opens as a bit of a dirge before exploding into something much more theatrical.
For their “Neighborhoods” session, the band brought that track and its unique setup of acoustic guitars and cello to the unusually well-manicured backyard of co-guitarist/-vocalist Nico Rose’s grandparents in Woodstock, New York, nearby where the quartet recorded Lovesick. “Her grandparents’ house served as home base,” the band explains, “an escape from Applehead Recording Studio after long, loud days of recording. Her grandmother, Gayle, is an exceptionally talented and kind woman. She’s a professional chef and would cook us the most delicious meals. She’s also a landscape architect, which is why her property is stunning. There’s a simplicity and beauty in that backyard that we wanted to capture in the stillness of this performance.”
