Gorillaz have teamed up with IDLES for a swaggering, dub-inspired new single entitled “The God of Lying.” The track marks the third pre-release tease from the band’s forthcoming album, The Mountain, following “The Manifesto“ (feat. Trueno and the late D12 emcee Proof) and “The Happy Dictator” (with Sparks). I’m sensing a theme with these song titles...
The song was written by Damon Albarn and IDLES’s Joe Talbot and recorded across London, Devon, and Mumbai with Ajay Prasanna on bansuri and percussion by Viraj Acharya. Regarding the track, Gorillaz’s 2D said: “Can I tell you a secret? Doubt is very tiring but questioning things is really good for you.”
Other artists featured on the album include Black Thought, Gruff Rhys, Jalen Ngonda, Johnny Marr, Kara Jackson, Omar Souleyman, The Clash’s Paul Simonon, and Yasiin Bey. The talents of late contributors include Bobby Womack, De La Soul’s Dave Jolicoeur, actor Dennis Hopper, The Fall’s Mark E. Smith, and Tony Allen.
