NYC’s MX Lonely have been making some serious noise in the grungegaze scene over the past few years, with their Cadonia and Spit EPs paving the way for a monumental debut. Today we’re learning that this album, titled All Monsters, will be arriving on February 20 via the nugaze-friendly Julia’s War label. The record’s lead single “Big Hips” matches their previous work’s blend of searing riffs with equally cathartic vocal hooks taking aim at the limitations of conventional gender roles and how their enforcement can really fuck you up at an early age.

“‘Big Hips’ is a self-mocking celebration of youthful masculinity,” shares lead vocalist Rae Haas. “Puberty imbues a sense of dread for everyone, but especially trans people. For me, the onset of feminine curves was met with a sort of voyeurism I didn’t feel I was made to be proud of. Big hips were something that happened to you rather than something you owned. The song recontextualizes the dysphoria of my youth in the way young boys would jovially proclaim the size of their phalluses (whether it was true or not). It’s a big dick joke.”

Between the schoolyard lyrical themes and metallic riffs, it makes sense that the track’s music video created by Owen Lehman would be set at a grade school, bringing any number of iconic nu-metal-era visuals to mind. Check that out below, and pre-order All Monsters here.
