Imagery lives at the core of shoegaze duo The Black Ryder’s richly textured and highly atmospheric sound. As such, the group’s music videos tend to achieve a level of artistry that allows previously hidden dimensions of their songs to surface. After releasing their highly cinematic second album The Door Behind the Door in February, the group has premiered two striking videos for leading tracks “Seventh Moon” and “Let Me Be Your Light,” both of which beautifully meld The Black Ryder’s music with its visual inspirations.
“Photography, film, art, actually going to the art gallery and seeing these things in person, all of these mediums really inspire me and enrich me” says Aimee Nash, vocalist, guitarist, and keyboardist for the duo, when we caught up with her recently.
We’re proud to premiere the group’s latest video, “Throwing Stones.” The clip, which was directed by Suzy Poling, features kaleidoscopic black-and-white images that mirror the many different textures of The Black Ryder’s sound and capture the juxtaposition between light and dark present within the composition—allowing the song to transform into living art.
“James Turrell was incredibly inspiring to me during the making of this album,” Nash says via email. “Going to see his exhibition here in Los Angeles had a profound effect on me because you could feel the effect that his work had on your mood by experiencing it in person.”
The latest video from Nash and her writing partner Scott Ryder is remarkably similar to Turrell’s work in that it harnesses the most fundamental aspects of imagery—light, color, and shape—in order to evoke an emotional response. Experience the journey for yourself below.
The Black Ryder will be touring with The Jesus & Mary Chain as well as headlining their own North American tour in the coming weeks.
“A lot of time and care went into the writing and recording of our album, and as much time and care has gone into pre-production, practice, and rehearsals for our shows,” Nash says. “It takes some time, patience, perseverance, and commitment to working on the dynamics of each song, but we feel that the songs take on a whole new life when we perform them live.”
