Last we checked in with NYC-based songwriter Nicole Rodriguez, she’d just released her debut album as Pearla, Oh Glistening Onion, the Nighttime Is Coming, which preceded a string of dates playing alongside Miss Grit, A.O. Gerber, and Kacy & Clayton. She’s released a slew of singles over the past two years or so, and at the moment is wrapping up a month-long weekly residency at NYC’s Francis Kite Club with her final “Song Room” show taking place tomorrow night.

In honor of that opportunity, Rodriguez is sharing another new track today called “You Didn’t Do Anything Wrong, You Just Broke My Heart” that manages to match that title’s dramatic flair. After opening as a fairly somber Americana tune, guitar feedback dominates the final minute as Rodriguez’s vocals struggle to be heard over the noise. “I was thinking about how painful it can be when someone you love can’t meet you where you are, or give you what you need,” she shares of the song’s mounting angst. “How it can be so easy to blame them or to blame yourself, but sometimes no one is at fault, and you’re just two different people wanting different things. This song is my attempt at accepting that place of tension, owning the sadness of a heartbreak and understanding it at the same time.”

Check out the new track below, and if you’re in New York you’ll have one final opportunity to catch Pearla at Francis Kite Club this week—find tickets and more info here.
