To celebrate our tenth anniversary, we knew we had to go big. Presenting the largest print issue we’ve ever made: 252 pages in a 12" x 12" format packed with dozens of amazing artists representing the past, present, and future of FLOOD’s editorial spectrum, while also looking back at key moments and events in our history.
While we commemorate a decade of FLOOD, we are also celebrating 25 years of Gorillaz, with a career-spanning cover interview with Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett on their visionary project, along with insights from De La Soul and Little Dragon, and 16 pages of incredible images from their vaults.
On the flip side of this issue’s Gorillaz cover is another act building their own magical universe: Magdalena Bay. In FLOOD 12: The Los Angeles Issue, we featured a “Breaking” story on the Miami-raised, LA-based duo. Since then it’s been a thrill to watch Mica Tenenbaum and Matthew Lewin rise from local club shows to packed festival crowds with their surreal, retro-futuristic world of fluffy clouds, angel wings, mirrors, and sunflowers. This marks the first of what will certainly be many more magazine covers to come for them.
For a limited time, we are also making a bundle available at a special discounted rate of $50 with both Gimme Shelter: Songs for LA Fire Relief, our recently announced double benefit album, and the FLOOD 13 print issue. Gimme Shelter features double translucent blue albums with packaging designed by Shepard Fairey, along with 18 rare recordings by Elliott Smith, Rilo Kiley, Local Natives, Flaming Lips, Norah Jones, Chromeo, Poolside, Dawes, and more. $35.98 from each bundle sale directly supports wildfire relief efforts in Altadena and Pacific Palisades.
MORE ON FLOOD 13
Throughout these pages, you’ll find reflections on our first 10 years: a decade of dynamic live photographs, our #1 albums from each year, and visual highlights from FLOODfest events, while we also turned the tables and asked 26 of our favorite artists (including My Morning Jacket, Spoon, Lucy Dacus, Phantogram, Amyl and the Sniffers, Hot Chip, and many more) to write about the albums that moved them most during the FLOOD era so far.
You’ll also find extensive interviews with Mac DeMarco, Lord Huron, Wolf Alice, Automatic, and Bootsy Collins. We also hope to introduce you to some new favorites with “Breaking” features on Rocket, Folk Bitch Trio, Upchuck, Madison McFerrin, Joey Valence & Brae, Tyler Ballgame, and N8NOFACE. Plus, Fred Armisen takes us on his Perfect Day in LA, The Zombies’ Colin Blunstone walks us through each track on their classic Odessey and Oracle, LA’s Jazz Is Dead team reveals how they’ve turned on a new generation to the classic sounds of ’70s Brazilian, African, and jazz grooves, San Francisco’s influential EMPIRE label takes us inside their 15 year anniversary, and Nation of Language share their favorite films of the past decade.
You’ll also find dozens of pages showcasing amazing artwork and photography, with features on the evocative photo work of actor Norman Reedus, legendary visual artist Cey Adams, the iconic punk and new wave photography of Michael Grecco, and the story behind the Smithsonian artists Rigoberto A. González and Felipe Galindo being targeted by the Trump administration.
