Following her May release, Nilam, California-based songwriter Ganavya has returned with two new singles which were both recorded at LEITER’s Funkhaus Studio in Berlin. Both “Would Be Better” and “Willow Street” were recorded with Sam Amidon, and “Willow Street” also features an appearance from Sam Gendel. The former is built around a gorgeous finger-picked guitar melody and intimate vocals from Ganavya, while the latter is accented by breathy woodwinds from the LA-based jazz musician.
As Ganavya explains, the two releases came from a moment of grieving. “‘You are sweetheart older brother,’ I had written to Sam [Amidon] early last year, after he quietly and lovingly held me as I cried over the phone about not being able to be there for my parents. The first occurrence of the word ‘freedom’ is, perhaps, the Ancient Sumerian word ‘amaragi,’ which means ‘return to Mother.’ Freedom, what takes us away from family/what returns us back home.”
