Ty Segall, Charles Moothart, and Chad Ubovich are three famously busy musicians, so it feels like a small miracle every time they convene to record another Fuzz album. Shortly after the heavy-psych super-group celebrated 10 years of their second album, II, and five years of its follow-up, III, today they’re dropping a collection of all the B-sides, loosies, covers, demos, and other goodies they’ve created along the way. Fuzz’s Fourth Dream takes its title from the buzzy dual single the band released in 2012 via Trouble in Mind Records (RIP) before unleashing the Sabbath homage that was their self-titled debut a year later, with both tracks opening the 22-song collection. “I just enjoy reflecting on what Fuzz has been able to achieve, given how busy everyone is,” Moothart tells us of the collection. “It’s cool to track the history of the band and remember how pure the genesis was.”

Regarding the inception of Fuzz’s Fourth Dream, Moorhart goes on: “We discussed doing this compilation for a long time. When we first started this band, we were just excited to make music and record ourselves. At the time, we worked with a lot of different independent labels, many of which were just getting their start, so some of these recordings only existed on small run 7-inches, but they were also some of the most formative recordings of the band. We wanted to bring all of that together because as fans of music, we also enjoy collections like these of bands we like.”

Along with a cover of King Crimson’s “21st Century Schizoid Man”—of course—the comp also includes the trio’s take on “Rich Man Poor Man” by ’70s blues-rock outfit The Groundhogs. Originally appearing on a 2013 Liverpool-centric comp from Trouble in Mind, the jam is lo-fi enough to fit comfortably on a demo-heavy release. “At the time, we were all really into The Groundhogs,” Moothart notes. “We recorded this song in our practice space in San Francisco in the SOMA—same room we recorded the ‘Sleigh Ride’ 7-inch and the ‘Fuzz’s Fourth Dream’ 7-inch, obviously at different times. I believe we recorded it on Ty’s 388, but it’s possible it was on my 688.”
