With last month’s English-language single “BIG VOID,” Silica Gel hinted that they were on a mission to prove to Western audiences that South Korea’s contemporary music influence extends far beyond the realm of pop. Formed over a decade ago and having a bit of a breakout moment here in the States last summer thanks to a Japanese Breakfast collaboration, this mission feels like a bit of a side-quest considering their primary goal of adapting the desert-brained psychedelia of King Gizzard and their Aussie peers to their local East Asian scene.
And “BIG VOID” wasn’t just a monumental track for the quartet due to the language it’s sung in—it also feels like a sonic shift within their traditionally art-pop palette as its ramshackle beat works around a jaunty piano part. Clearly there’s a diverse set of influences at play, and we asked all four of the band’s members to work out just what those might be. “All of our members have quite different tastes, but surprisingly, we all love MGMT,” shares Woonghee—one of two members who selected a track by the modern psych-pop innovators. Additionally, several mentions of bandmates’ side-projects materialize here paired with genuine statements of support, detailing how their work outside of Silica Gel ironically finds its way back into the band’s formula.

GEONJAY
Silica Gel, “Eres Tu”
As the opening track of Silica Gel’s second full-length album, “Eres Tu” plays its role perfectly. I believe that it’s an easy and approachable track for listening to Silica Gel’s synth-pop side at full output. It’s also a track I personally have a lot of affection for. In fact, I’d highly recommend listening to it straight through from track one, “On Black.” Key listening points are the powerful synths, thick bass, and the satisfying punch of the guitar and drums. And that subtle moment of chaos in the middle leaves a lingering aftertaste that keeps echoing in your ears…
Silica Gel의 정규 2집의 포문을 여는 역할을 톡톡히 해주고 있는 곡입니다. Silica Gel이 출력할 수 있는 synth-pop적인 면모를 듣기에 부담없는 트랙이라고 생각합니다. 개인적으로도 아주 애정하는 트랙인데요, 1번 트랙인 on black과 이어서 들어보기를 추천드립니다. 감상 포인트는 파워풀한 신스와 두꺼운 베이스, 기분좋은 기타와 드럼의 펀치감! 중반부에 나오는 깨알같은 난동(?) 구간이 주는 뒷맛이 귓가에 맴돌지도 모릅니다.
Noridogam, “Truthbuster”
This is a recent release from Noridogam, Chunchu’s side project. It has a running time of around seven minutes, which I personally love, and a great sense of breathing space throughout. I feel like Chunchu’s vocal character, compared to his earlier works, is in the process of turning into something more confident here. That particular sense of repetition that seven minute tracks tend to have is part of the charm, as well.

Shirakami Woods, “Swallow”
“Swallow” is a track from the recent EP by my side project, Shirakami Woods. It’s a piece of music I made to commemorate midsummer. I tried to capture the scenery of an evening night after the intense heat of midday had passed through. I’ve always felt that people experience summer almost like a strip of film, and in the middle section of the track, I tried to express that feeling by filling it with piano. If you listen closely to that part, maybe—just for a moment—you might become a midsummer swallow yourself.
제 사이드 프로젝트인 Shirakami Woods의 최근 EP 수록곡인 Swallow 입니다. 한 여름을 기념하며 만들었던 음악인데요, 한낮의 뜨거운 기운이 불어 지나간 저녁밤의 풍경을 담아보고자 이리저리 음들을 만져봤던 곡이랍니다. 사람들은 여름을 마치 필름처럼 느낀다는 생각이 들었는데요, 곡 중반부엔 그 부분을 녹여보려 피아노로 소리를 채워봤습니다. 그 구간을 듣고 있으면… 한 여름의 제비가 잠시 되어볼 수도 있지 않을까 생각합니다.
Wah Wah Wah, “Brain Overload”
If you thought this was The Lizard, you’ve been fooled. This is Korea’s Lizard: Wah Wah Wah. They’re a dear Korean band currently carrying out one of the most distinctly foreign sounding activities in the scene. It’s also a side project of bassist Woonghee. Melodies build repetitive structures, then break them apart just when they start to feel familiar, only to stack new repetitions again. It’s a real feast of sound and a lot of fun to listen to. Personally, the strange swing that starts around 2:10 feels like it can turn any time of day into a pleasantly uplifting afternoon.
‘그 도마뱀 마법사’인 줄 알았다면 당신은 속았습니다. 이 곡은 한국의 도마뱀 마법사인 Wah Wah Wah 입니다. 현재 한국에서 가장 외국적 색깔이 짙은 활동을 이어가고 있는, 친애하는 한국의 밴드입니다. 베이시스트 웅희의 사이드 프로젝트이기도 하지요. 멜로디들이 반복적으로 구조를 만들고, 완성될 쯤 그것을 부숴버리고 새로운 반복이 쌓이는, 음의 잔치가 참 즐거운 음악입니다. 개인적으로는 2분 10초쯤 시작되는 묘한 스윙감이, 이 곡을 몇 시에 듣게 되어도 아주 기분 좋은 오후의 느낌을 만들어주는 것 같아요.
WOONGHEE
Pond, “Toast”
I’m a big fan of Aussie psych. There are so many heroes like Stu Mackenzie and Kevin Parker, but I’ve always loved Jay Watson. That naturally led me to Pond, and I actually take a lot of inspiration from them for my own bass playing in Silica Gel. This is one of my absolute favorites.
저는 호주의 사이키델릭 음악을 아주 좋아해요. Stu Mackenzie, Kevin Parker 등 여러 히어로들이 있지만 Jay watson을 좋아했습니다. 그러다 보니 자연스럽게 Pond도 좋아하게 되었고, 실리카겔의 연주에 Pond를 참고하고 있어요. Pond의 음악 중 제가 가장 좋아하는 곡을 추천드립니다.
Snapped Ankles, “Raoul”
Snapped Ankles are a brilliant London-based band. I love how they mix the energy of punk with electronic sounds—it’s just fantastic. But the best part is their live vibe. You’ve got to check out their costumes and performance. It’s something else.

MGMT is a huge inspiration for Silica Gel. All of our members have quite different tastes, but surprisingly, we all love MGMT. I think their musical style has influenced our sound a lot. I chose this track because I wanted to celebrate the future—both yours and ours.

MGMT, “She Works Out Too Much”
This is the opening track from Little Dark Age, one of my favourite MGMT albums. The extremely hectic arrangement, combined with the tightly interwoven vocals, is especially captivating. When I found out that Ariel Pink was involved in the production, I thought, “Of course—that makes perfect sense.”

This is not a track from their most famous album, but as a devoted fan, I often return to it. It’s refreshing, and its dynamic groove always feels uplifting and enjoyable to me.

I’m a huge fan of the Pat Metheny Group, and among his works, this track stands out with a particularly distinctive sense of “fusion.” It’s a truly precious piece that has given me a great deal of musical inspiration.

HANJOO
Björk, “Hyperballad”
Björk’s many artistic decisions throughout her career are absolutely worthy of admiration. From The Sugarcubes to her music today, it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to think of it all as a single universe—her recorded sounds are so intricate and extraordinary. I once watched a video of her performing “Hyperballad” live, and it stayed with me as an unforgettable moment.
Bjork의 커리어에 있었던 여러 예술적인 결정들은 존경받아 마땅한 내용들이었다. Sugarcubes부터 현재 Bjork의 음악까지가 하나의 우주라는 가정을 해도 무방할 만큼, 그녀가 기록해둔 소리들은 촘촘하고 대단하다. 언젠가 라이브 무대에서 Hyperballad를 부르는 영상을 시청한 경험이 있다. 잊기 어려운 순간으로 남았기에 선곡했다.
Moses Sumney, “Vintage”
Musicians each have their own kind of charm. For some, it’s their rough edge that looks effortlessly cool; for others, it’s a delicate, meticulous quality that leaves a lasting impression. Moses Sumney handles music with remarkable mastery, and as someone who makes music too, I can’t help but feel a real thrill watching that level of control. He changes the air with a gentle dance—this is the kind of music Moses Sumney makes. And especially on “Vintage,” he keeps everything beautifully restrained, while every so often a dazzling moment cuts right through.
뮤지션들은 제각기 다른 매력을 지니고 있다. 누군가는 거친 모습이 멋져보이고, 누군가는 섬세하고 치밀한 모습이 인상적으로 다가오곤 한다. Moses Sumney는 음악을 매우 능란하게 다루고, 음악을 만드는 입장에서 그런 모습에 쾌감을 느끼곤 한다. 부드러운 춤으로 공기를 바꿔낸다. Moses Sumney는 그런 음악을 들려준다. 특히 Vintage에서는 절제미를 유지하면서도 한 번씩 치고 들어오는 빛나는 순간들이 기록됐다.
The Strokes, “One Way Trigger”
Sometimes when I think back to my childhood, I remember how completely I was captivated by The Strokes’ straight-ahead way of expressing music. Their note choices, the way they organize rhythm—simple, but so clean and satisfying. I picked this because it brought me back to that era of The Strokes.
가끔 어린 시절을 떠올리자니 The Strokes 특유의 직선적인 음악 표현에 심취했던 내 모습을 기억해보곤 한다. 노트의 구성, 리듬을 조직하는 방식 등, 심플하지만 딱딱 떨어지는 쾌감을 선사해주던 그 시절의 The Strokes가 생각나서 선곡했다.
