South London songwriter RY-GUY’s music tends to explore a variety of avenues jutting off of the intersection of classic soul and more contemporary innovations in psychedelic bedroom-pop, though one thing remains constant: one eye fixated on creative icons of the 20th century. Citing Jimi Hendrix and Al Green as influences alongside modern art and literature, his soon-to-be-released second EP like a river is, true to its name, a fluid journey through all of the artistic movements that have shaped the visionary thus far in his young career.
Before the EP drops on March 27, RY-GUY is sharing another taste of the project with the slow-burn ballad “Change Is Gonna Come”—a lyrically intense meditation on euthanasia that was influenced musically by the King of Soul himself, coasting on languid guitar, a gentle drum patter, and RY-GUY’s impassioned vocals. “The song, told in the first person, examines morality and the impact that circumstances can have on viewpoints, potentially leading to disturbing outcomes,” the artist shares. “Through its lyrical voyage and nuanced experimentation, this song displays its own form of free will, paying homage to Sam Cooke’s revolutionary ‘A Change Is Gonna Come’ as it unfolds.”
