After recently recording with queer country icons Lavender Country on their reunion album, and landing a residency at Lucinda Williams’ East Village honky-tonk, country’s other Paisley returns today with news of a new solo album. Paisley Field’s fourth LP Are U Mad at Me lands May 1 via Don Giovanni, and lead single “parTy girl” sees the artist exploring a more pop-forward direction via vocoded choruses and a backing instrumental repurposing a traditional honky-tonk setup for something far dancier. Er, y’know, it inspires movement beyond line dancing.

“I’ve always been influenced by pop music and grew up listening to grunge,” the songwriter shares of the new directions much of Are U Mad at Me explores, ranging from heavier rock music to disco territory. “I love country music, but this record called me to explore a new sound. I see it as an evolution, not a departure.”

The video for “parTy girl” reflects that new sound, with Paisley Fields karaoke-ing the single to a room full of dancing friends. Check it out below, and pre-order Are U Mad at Me here.
