Charles Moothart has been a prolific figure in the West Coast garage rock scene for two decades now, whether he’s collaborating with Ty Segall as a member of Fuzz, GØGGS, or Segall’s Freedom Band or releasing music as a solo artist (often under the acronym CFM). He kicked off 2025 with a double single via a new project called Primitive Ring that prioritizes the same heavy-psych, proto-metal sounds as Fuzz, with fellow garage-psych ensemble Hooveriii’s Bert Hoover and Jon Modaff rounding out the trio. They released three more sets of double singles before the year ended.

Now, the band is announcing their self-titled debut with a whole new slate of tracks. The first of the 11 featured on Primitive Ring to drop is called “Heads Will Roll,” and it’s everything you’d hope it would be: fast-paced, riff-heavy, and unrelenting. “It was the track that glued the record together,” the band shares of the final cut they recorded, which serves as the project’s centerpiece. “‘Heads’ helped complete the vision. We were missing something driving to push to the next chapter, so to speak.” Citing ’60s acid-rockers Blue Cheer as an influence, they go on to add that the track’s central tension arose simply from “living in the moment,” politically speaking. “Seems like we’re gunning for the wasteland. So why not find beauty in what we have?”

Check out the appropriately psychedelic video for “Heads Will Roll” below, featuring the band ripping the tune in front of a barrage of cartoon imagery. You can also catch the band on tour with Ty Segall this spring, including a stop at Mosswood Meltdown—check out the full list of dates here.
