Working under the name On Man over the past few years, English electronic producer Andrew Jim Gannon is stepping into the spotlight on his newly announced album Hydrate Those Folds!. Not only does it mark his first release under his own name, but the record’s 11 songs will see Gannon shifting from deconstructed club sounds and glitch-pop signifiers to a more conventional dance-music sound with little interference to his vocal performances. The two tracks he’s already shared this year demonstrate the laid-back electronics and baritone trill that define these songs, and the newly unveiled third single “Bon Boys Will Break Your Heart” follows suit.
Among all the excitement today, Gannon is also sharing a remix of “Bon Boys” helmed by Xiu Xiu, as Jamie Stewert continues their streak of tinkering with the compositions of others. The pairing is a natural fit, with Xiu Xiu’s version characteristically going a bit darker. At times it can also be hard to discern which of the two artists lends their vocals to the cut underneath the industrial-club clamor—that is until Stewart’s patented quaver takes over. “I’ve always loved how Xiu Xiu can peel a song back to expose the nerves while keeping things intimate and tender,” Gannon shares. “Their remix of ‘Bon Boys Will Break Your Heart’ slices open the original and reveals this strange, heavy, four-to-the-floor energy. Exactly the kind of beautiful dissection I was hoping for.”
For their part, Stewart jumped on the opportunity to rework the track. “The chance to deeply explore the music of Andrew Jim Gannon was such a pleasure,” they add. “Gannon’s voice is the voice I wish I had, and remixing it into oblivion? A dream!”
