As is usually the case, Guided by Voices are teasing a new record. Crawlspace of the Pantheon is (by our count, at least) the band’s 43 record and 14th of the decade so far, with Robert Pollard and his current lineup (including guitarist Doug Gillard, who’s also teasing his own solo record at the moment) cranking out fuzzy slacker-pop anthems at a pace that’s fairly unprecedented for recordings that feel far more polished than the works of someone like R. Stevie Moore. The latest of which is titled “Advance Without Dropping,” and it’s a driving cut marked by characteristically cryptic lyrics.

“I say ‘my son’ a lot in this song but it’s not necessarily to my son, Bryan. It could be to any young person,” Pollard shares, clarifying just how many young ears his music has reached over the past 40-odd years. Or something like that. “I’ve got about five or six guys I hang out with that I refer to as my son. One of them is in my band.”
