When a performance of King Lear failed to move This American Life host and producer Ira Glass earlier this summer, he took to Twitter to express himself thusly:
@JohnLithgow as Lear tonight: amazing. Shakespeare: not good. No stakes, not relatable. I think I’m realizing: Shakespeare sucks.
— Ira Glass (@iraglass) July 28, 2014
Looks like relatively new Twitterer Glass is still getting the ropes, and while his Tweet was inadvertently directed to Lithgow (who was playing Lear that evening), the backlash was still predictably widespread. On The Tonight Show last night, Glass explains to Jimmy Fallon why he thinks the Internet reacted so fiercely. “I think it’s because I’m on public broadcasting,” says Glass. “People think: ‘You and Shakespeare, you’re on the same team.’ It’s as if Mr. Rogers had tweeted: ‘Kermit’s an asshole.'”
