Jennifer Hernandez—a.k.a. JWords—has long been drawn to collaboration, teaming up with rappers Maassai and Nappy Nina in the past for album-length projects with both individual artists for which she supplied the beats. Yet with her upcoming album Sound Therapy, Hernandez will be stepping up to the mic for the first time to supply vocals over the sound beds she creates, which land somewhere between hip-hop and dance music inspired by subgenres like Jersey club and tech house. Having already shared the pulsating, largely vocal-free lead single “Lush,” she returns with a second track from the album today that’s also one of its two collaborations.

Following their team-up on 2021’s Double Down LP, Nappy Nina reunites with Hernandez on “Clarity,” a skittering testament to figuring it all out. “‘Clarity’ is about letting go of what doesn’t work so what does actually work aligns,” shares JWords of the track. It came together quickly while the artist was in transit, with its energy providing a natural foundation for a wordy second verse from Nina. “I had made this beat on my way to Chicago on my OP-XY and just the way the chords and melody came together, I thought Nappy Nina would kill this beat and she did. We recorded it once I was back in town.”
