Magdalena Bay shared a bit of insight into their next big project when we spoke to them last year for our print cover story, with Mica Tenenbaum and Matthew Lewin teasing an “album movie” based on 2024’s breakout conceptual LP Imaginal Disk. “When the full thing is out, hopefully it should help people make some sense of it,” Lewin told us somewhat cryptically. “But even when it is out, I’m sure plenty of people will be like, ‘What the hell was that? I don’t understand what I just saw.’ If you try to approach it too literally, then you’ll probably end up a little disappointed. A lot of the narrative elements are very loose, but that’s intentional. We definitely want people to impart their own narrative.”
Today the band is sharing that the film—directed by Amanda Kramer, who also helmed the band’s music videos for “Death & Romance,” “Image,” and “That’s My Floor”—will make its debut at the Tribeca Film Festival in June. Check out their IG announcement below featuring stills from the film, and get to know director Kramer via our recent Q&A with the filmmaker about her other new film, which is notably about Juliette Lewis turning into a chair, here.
