Easy Eye Records have come to be regarded for their immaculately vintage mid-century take on rock and roll, soul, R&B, country, and more, though the upcoming release from Fai Laci covers a refreshing return to a much different moment in music history. Set for a June 26 release, the Boston rockers’ debut album Elephant in the Room harkens back to the alt sounds of the early 2010s; Cage the Elephant comes immediately to mind, while these songs’ pop bounce often recalls the radio hits of Foster the People or Empire of the Sun.
“Headlights” is the latest track to arrive from the collection, which was produced by Dan Auerbach—whose music with The Black Keys once landed on alt-rock radio alongside those reference points. Despite the grooving riffs and handclap punctuation, there’s a certain angst undergirding the track, one that band leader Luke Faillaci attributes to the era in which it was written more so than the era that inspired it. “‘Headlights’ was written to capture the feeling of kids our age right now. All of this stuff is happening to us, and here I am, 25 years old, battling between where I want to end up and who I want to become. Especially with the ridiculous state the world is in right now, it feels urgent to make an impact for the better.”
The track comes with an Isaiah Saunders–directed music video, which sees Faillaci struggling to navigate an industrial escape room of sorts. Elephant in the Room is available to pre-order here, and you can find Fai Laci on tour with The Black Keys this summer at the dates listed here.
