Ryan Kaiser’s new Yot Club album Simpleton is focused on the isolation of suburban American living, with Kaiser managing to channel such feelings of loneliness by recording alone in his own home studio (and, in at least one case, in an Airbnb). It’s quickly becoming less common for an artist billed as a “bedroom pop” songwriter to take that tag literally, though it seems to be a badge of honor for Yot Club—any change in sound between albums is less attributable to a change in personnel than a change in surroundings. “I tend to move to a new city after each album I make,” Kaiser tells us. “Simpleton was recorded at my place in Philly, and I moved to LA right after I finished it.”

Offering us a glimpse of his new spot in Los Angeles, Kaiser recorded a “FLOOD Session” for us in his new home studio where he played the album tracks “Make It Easy” and “Bones” on guitar. “I was still getting moved in at the time of doing those,” he shares of the song performances. “It’s a little detached studio in the backyard and it’s the first time I’ve ever had some separation between where I live and work. It’s nice not living in the studio, to be honest, but it’s still a few steps away if any ideas hit.”
