Fifteen years removed from their self-titled debut, Widowspeak have only grown more comfortable over the course of seven records as the project’s married factions Molly Hamilton and Robert Earl Thomas slip into a groove domestically. Roses feels like an apt name for their latest effort, as it sees the duo stopping to fully appreciate the subtle joys of life after years of rushing past them. On the project’s latest single “Soft Cover,” that means Hamilton singing an ode to her partner as if he was a new crush, with the upbeat, soft-rocking backing instrumental recalling the sensation of butterflies in one’s stomach. “‘Soft Cover’ is about infatuation,” Hamilton shares, “wanting and daydreaming about someone as you’re going about your day—even if, and maybe especially if, you’ve been with them a long time.”

The track’s music video picks up where the clip for previous single “No Driver” left off, with Hamilton in costume fantasizing about the subject of the novel she’s reading—who we learn is actually very real in the visual’s final moments. “The video is the last in the world of the trilogy, where the Singing Telegram Girl is dreaming about an idealized Renaissance Faire Guy while waiting around, reading a pulpy novel,” she explains. “Rob was incredibly enthusiastic about this one because he loves medieval history and we got to pick out some fun costumes from Adele’s of Hollywood. He’s a star!”
