Australian indie rockers Spacey Jane are less than a month out from kicking off the North American leg of their “If That Makes Sense” tour, and it seems likely that the first week of shows will be full of unreleased material. Their setlist may not change after June 12, but instead the unfamiliar tunes from those prior shows will be out in the world via the band’s newly announced Exit Wounds EP, arriving on the Concord label early in their journey through the US. Following last year’s If That Makes Sense LP, the project will feature five brand new tracks—the latest of which, “I Never See Her,” lands today.
The band’s Caleb Harper tells us that the somber vocals heard at the forefront of the tune can be chalked up to the song’s inspiration coming from feeling stuck in a rut after a breakup. “I think most people have wrestled with knowing it’s time to move on, but [remain] unable to overcome the fear of losing someone,” he shares. “The song is about being caught in the middle of those feelings and trying to map out where home and safety will be when you do land.”
Despite its subject matter, the new track remains fairly upbeat throughout its three-minute runtime, injecting a sense of hope to its messaging with twanging guitar and thumping percussion. “This song actually started about 60 BPM slower,” Harper adds, “so hearing it as a high-tempo bop gives the song a confused tension when I listen.”
