Less than a year after releasing their homage to the CD format, Super Love 3, Austin-based duo Dorio are already furtively charting their next move. Their next record will be titled Agent Friday & the Perfect Angel, and as its title suggests, it will see Chad Doriocourt and Rachel Rascoe taking an even more conceptual approach to album-making with its 11 songs spinning tales of espionage after the pair realized that they both had spy thrillers on the brain. “We really leaned into the capacity of pop songwriting to instantly create a fantasy or luxury in an immediate, instinctual way,” Rascoe shares of their weaving approach to the new material. “You can get from point A to point B real fast.”
First single “My Own Personal Racer” also confirms that their sonic influences remain in the mid-’90s and early 2000s, with an unyielding electronic pulse bringing artists like Orbital to mind before the duo’s breezy psych-pop harmonies enter the frame. “I started out self-conscious about not having live drums and bass,” explains Doricourt, “but seeing people dance to our DJ-type sets with our sampler handling the drums and bass ended up being an eye-opener.”
Check out the very The Conversation music video the duo made with director Nick Stoner for the track below, which might be better fit for an early Danny Boyle movie’s soundtrack. You can also pre-order Agent Friday & the Perfect Angel here ahead of the record’s July 24 release via Earth Libraries, and catch the band on their North American tour in support of the record in July at the dates listed here.
