Riding the new wave of exposure earned by her compositional work for the BBC series Small Prophets, LA’s Cinder Well will return next month with the LP A Blooming Body. Led by the single and album opener “While the Body Screams Silently,” Amelia Baker’s fifth full-length continues to mine the territory of sparse and gloomy folk music that tends to bleed into the metal community (case in point, you can hear Baker on fiddle on Pallbearer’s doomy live record from last year). Today she’s exchanging that track’s piano for acoustic guitar on the more rustic “Beyond the Pale,” which the songwriter describes as “a hangover, a breakup, a migraine, a confessional” before shouting out a few key players on the cut: bassist and Tom Waits collaborator Greg Cohen and Haley Heynderickx drummer Phillip Rogers.
The track’s music video, meanwhile, takes the lightly surreal form of Baker traversing LA with a transparent box of water, carefully transporting the liquid cargo until she reaches the coast and immerses herself in its contents. “The music video concept came to me in a dream,” she shares, “and as I relayed it aloud in the morning, I figured it was weird enough to actually try. Thanks to Cheech for making the video come to life, and for running around Los Angeles carrying a box full of water with me.”
