It’s now been a full two years since Remi Wolf dropped her last collection of big ideas, and despite plenty of festival appearances and guest spots on her peers’ records in the interim, we haven’t heard anything in the way of new material since then. That all changed last weekend when Wolf crashed Hayley Williams’ set at Newport Folk Festival, where she debuted an unreleased track titled “Twiggy” (well, it’s listed as “Twiggy Little Butt” on the performance videos uploaded to YouTube). And today she’s sharing that cut with those of us who weren’t lucky enough to experience it firsthand, suggesting that it may be the first look at a new chapter for the artist.
The studio version of the track opens as an upbeat indie-folk track spotlighting Wolf’s belted vocals and provocative lyrics before later exploding into a rousing finale as the instrumental builds and the songwriter’s tone becomes spiteful. “I wrote ‘Twiggy’ about people I’ve been with that lack both butts and emotional availability,” Wolf quips of the new single. “And how I like that. Or maybe it’s just about the messiness of addiction? IDK, you decide.”
