For nearly two decades now, Wavves has primarily been synonymous with the surf-punk outfit’s frontman Nathan Williams, though Williams has never been opposed to collaboration. The project’s earliest chapter was partly defined by his work with percussionist Zach Hill and his split releases with Best Coast and Trash Talk, while some time later he began releasing album-length collections paired with other bands, such as Cloud Nothings. It’s this format through which he’ll release his follow-up to last summer’s Spun LP, this time teaming up with emo-pop scenesters Say Anything. Their album Cherry Soda is slated to arrive on September 18 via the pop-punk outlet I Surrender Records, and its second and latest single “Still Alive” falls directly in line with the soaring power-pop choruses both Williams and Max Bemis have long proven proficient in.
“‘Still Alive’ was a random voice note I found in my phone,” shares Williams of the tune, which feels like it could be tacked onto Wavves’ 2016 split with Weezer. “I recorded the initial melody and lyric in the bathroom at a dive bar called the Club Marina and then completely forgot about it for a few weeks. One day, a month or two later, I noticed the voice note and was like, ‘Oh yeah!’ After that, the full song came together in 40 minutes. It was just one of those songs that had already written itself. God bless the Club Marina.”
