Given that their forthcoming LP On the Quay is their first as a quintet, it may be no surprise that sundots’s new single “Distraction” signifies just how malleable the Connecticut band remains seven years after dropping their debut EP. The jammy cut arrives ahead of the group’s debut album for Nettwerk Music Group as a bit of a departure from the elements of slacker rock and slowcore heard on 2024’s Honeyspot, instead favoring a snakier structure and sharpened production techniques.

According to frontman Drew Collins, “Distraction” is responsible for forging new trails for sundots, which benefitted the direction of On the Quay. “I think this track informed a new approach for us to songwriting together as a band,” he notes. “I brought the skeleton of this track to the band, maybe a week before our first tour with Panchiko. We were all so excited about it that we finished writing it and drilled it enough to have it ready for the tour. It definitely felt like a departure in sound from some of our other tracks, but people on tour seemed super receptive to it. We felt confident in it, and chased a similar workflow for the rest of the record.”
